Abstract

This article explores the evolution of historical literature on energy, highlighting key conceptual and methodological developments, as well as emerging themes shaped by the Anthropocene and contemporary environmental concerns. Over the past forty years, interdisciplinary and empirical contributions from ecology, economics, and environmental history have positioned energy as a vital lens for understanding both modern economic development and current energy challenges. By employing statistical tools, national-scale energy histories have illuminated patterns of consumption, energy transitions, and the economic significance of various energy sources. They also reveal how electrification and fossil fuels have shaped the social and cultural fabric of modern transportation and society.
