Daniel Anisits, a Hungarian Pioneer of Natural Sciences in Paraguay

This paper aims to study the extensive exploratory work of a Hungarian scientist, less known in Latin America, as well as his contribution to the development of the natural sciences in Paraguay, Brazil, Argentina, Germany and Hungary in the last decades of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th century. In addition to his botanical, zoological and ichthyological research and his extraordinary work in collecting a great variety of plant and animal species, Professor Dániel Anisits also carried out meteorological measurements in Paraguay, where he lived for a quarter of a century with his mother and sister. After leaving behind a promising career as a pharmacist in his native country, the young Hungarian became a respected and renowned university professor in Paraguayan and South American scientific circles. Contemporary Hungarian and Latin American sources will be used to present his achievements and extensive academic contacts.
