This study aimed to explore the main debates, theories, and conceptual frameworks found in the specialized literature on environmental hermeneutics during the period 2013–2023. To this end, a systematic search for information was conducted in academic databases, using a strategy based on a combination of keywords and search operators. It was found that environmental hermeneutics is an interdisciplinary field of study that includes, in particular, law, ethics, ecocriticism, and the critical philosophy of traditional strands of Western ontology and epistemology. The assertion of nature as a “subject” in communication and of rights calls for alternative approaches to understanding the natural world through human culture. Environmental hermeneutics is proposed as a theoretical-methodological framework for appreciating nature based on the search for meaning and “experiences of truth” that differ from knowledge systems that tend to objectify and reify nature.
