La historia del paisaje es la historia de la diversidad biológica y cultural. Los patrones espaciales y temporales de la biodiversidad resultan de la relación entre los procesos históricos, humanos y ecológicos, como lo demuestra la agricultura trashumante llevada a cabo por las culturas mesoamericanas, que facilitaron la movilidad de las especies de plantas acarreadas por especies de murciélagos y aves consumidoras de frutos y semillas, para agilizar la regeneración de las parcelas abandonadas, configurando una cadena de dispersión, cuyos elementos remanentes aún favorecen el flujo de dispersores en el paisaje de Mesoamérica, a pesar de los cambios ambientales y de las fluctuaciones de otras especies de herbívoros terrestres, nativos e introducidos.
